Amid protests and fighting in Taksim Square, there are little glimmers of hope. Small, musical glimmers.

When riot police first raided the square a couple of weeks ago a man named Serhat Köksat was in the crowd, a man who, according to the Guardian, is "the pioneer of politically charged Turkish electro music." During the raid the artist, also known as 2/5BZ, fell into a construction trench and both of his arms were broken.

Although Köksat was unable to take part in any further protests, musicians from all over Istanbul have been joining the rallies in his stead. One such musician is pianist Davide Martello, who parked his piano in Taksim Square a couple of days ago and began to play.

In a peaceful protest statement Martello played The Beatles' "Let it Be" to the crowd, urging them to sing along. The video is worth a watch, and a great example of how empowering and inspiring music can be. Check it this second video from YouTube.
