A musical featuring the music of slain hip-hop superstar Tupac Shakur, called Holler If Ya Hear Me, is currently being workshopped on its way to Broadway. No specific release dates have been announced, but it is said that the producers want to debut the show during the 2013-2014 season.

The Hollywood Reporter gave the following synopsis of the musical:

A non-biographical original story, the show is set in the present day, on the inner-city streets of a Midwestern industrial city, chronicling the challenges faced by two childhood friends and their extended families. The story is inspired by and unfolds to the music of Shakur, the influential rapper who died in 1996 and has sold more than 75 million albums worldwide.

The play will be directed Kenny Leon, who has also worked on Broadway productions such as Fences, with Denzel Washington, and The Mountaintop with Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett. Choreography will be done by Wayne Cilento, a Tony-winner who's resume includes Broadway hits like The Who's Tommy and Wicked. Daryl Waters will be supervising the music, and has worked on classic shows like The Color Purple and Memphis. One of the show's lead producers will be Afeni Shakur - Tupac's mother.
