“We LOOOOOOOOOOVE New York!”

So proclaimed moe. before their encore at a packed Beekman Beer Garden Wednesday night. It was their second show in NYC (the previous night they played Brooklyn Bowl) and die hard fans showed up to represent their dedication to one of the most popular American jam bands on the scene today. If you’re not familiar with moe. the members are: Rob Derhak (bass, vocals), Al Schnier (guitar, vocals, keyboard), Chuck Garvey (guitar, vocals), Vinnie Amico (drums), and Jim Loughlin (percussion).

When the show kicked off at 6:30pm there was already a large crowd under the tent. The first two songs “Tailspin” and “All Roads Lead To Home” got the crowd nice and lubed up for an evening of mind melting tunes under a muggy Manhattan sky. Midway through the first set was when Al and Chuck started to really get deep and exploratory into their guitar solos. The crowd, each dancing to their own inner rhythm, was letting the music penetrate them as some danced while others raised their arms in excitement. It’s safe to assume I wasn’t the only one surprised when the band busted into their version of the Rolling Stones classic “Can’t You Hear Me Knockin’” as the final song of the first set. Many around me were lip singing the words and air guitaring/drumming the parts. Rob, Al, and Chuck really stretched out the end of the song and by the time they were done everyone knew the band was in top form and were left in suspense as to what they would break out for the second set.

Fans used this time between sets to chat with each other, catch a cool breeze off the water and look at the beautiful Brooklyn Bridge skyline. Beekman Beer Garden is a very unique venue to catch a show in that performers play under a giant tent (in case of rain) and attendees can either watch from inside or go a few steps to the outside section where there’s couches (they light up at night) spread across a sandy surface, making it feel like you’re on the beach. The view of the Brooklyn Bridge makes it a spectacular sight, especially if there’s a colorful sunset.

A mostly instrumental “Silver Sun” opened up the second set as hungry moe. fans gathered back under the tent. Although the air was humid and everyone’s body heat caused it to feel close to a 100 degrees it didn’t stop many from getting their dance on and squeezing in as close to the stage as possible.

The highlight of the set was undoubtedly the combo of “Happy Hour Hero > Seat Of My Pants > Meat”. The visuals and light show illuminating the inside of the tent along with the bands spacey, exploratory jamming was a sight and feeling like none other. “Meat”, a fan favorite song, witnessed Al and Chuck showcasing their guitar skills as they traded solos back and forth, building a tension and elevating the crowd with their instruments before dropping back into a steady jam. Vinny and Jim also had their moment to shine as they tag teamed to spoil us with a kick ass drum and percussion solo that lasted for a good five minutes.

Fans erupted and begged for more when the 2nd set was over. The band got off stage for a very short time before coming back and thanking us for coming. They also made a few special announcements and shout outs. For two people attending it was their 100th show, one person’s 50th, and one person’s 10th. They also shouted out a few special birthday requests as well as anniversaries. After declaring their love for New York City and urging fans to attend their upcoming upstate NY festival in August titled Moedown they treated us to a two song encore, “Farmer Ben > New York City”.

A moe. show is always a special event in that many ingredients are involved; the music, visuals, fans, friends, vibe, and atmosphere. This show was definitely one to remember because all those ingredients mixed perfectly together on this night. I'm sure they turned a few casual fans into "moe.rons" and will continue to impress throughout their summer tour.
