John 5 WUMF Interview - Mayhem Festival 7.17.13 [YouTube Video]

Published July 19, 2013

University Of Maine - Farmington's radio station, 91.5 WUMF, had the pleasure of talking with long-time Rob Zombie guitarist, John 5, during Rockstar Energy Drink's Mayhem Festival stop in Bangor, Maine. During this 11-minute interview, John 5 touches on many different topics, such as tour life, bands he's enjoyed watching during his free time at the festival, and Rob Zombie's new album - Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor.

The new album sold 34,000 copies in the United States upon its first week of release, peaking at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 chart. John 5 states that the new album was a fun record to make, and has been well-received and enjoyed highly by fans of Rob Zombie, particularly the album's first track "Teenage Nosferatu Pussy" and their radio single "Dead City Radio." He also mentions that a live concert DVD is in the works, which will be a first for the group - which is surprising considering how involved Rob Zombie has been with regards to making horror films over the years.

John 5 also sheds some light on the band's addition of drummer Ginger Fish. Having previously drummed for Marilyn Manson, Fish agreed to join Rob Zombie when they had lost drummer Tommy Clufetos to Ozzy Osbourne and Joey Jordison to Slipknot.

Besides his solo work, when asked to explain his affinity for being a member of theatrical rock groups like Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie, he replies that "this is entertainment. People want to be entertained. That's what we do." He wants people to leave a performance saying "Wow, that was a great show." He also shares that being a fan of shock bands like Kiss and Alice Cooper as a child were a major influence on his career choices.

"I really love the guitar. I love music, and I love pushing myself. I love anybody that is great at what they do. It could be a BMX guy, or it could be a boxer, or a baseball player or a drummer, so i try to be the best that i can be."
