MoMA's Soundings, their first sound art exhibition, features 16 of the "most innovative contemporary artists working with sound." The range is diverse with some artists focusing on field recordings, others contributing visual representations of sounds inaudible, yet all striving to exemplify mode and environment as essential in determining what we actually hear. From the official Soundings exhibition description on MoMA's website:

At a time when personal listening devices and tailored playlists have become ubiquitous, shared aural spaces are increasingly rare. Many of the artists in the exhibition aim for such realities, and the sound they create is decidedly social, immersing visitors and connecting them in space.
