PBS "Blank on Blank" Animates Kurt Cobain Interview from 1993

In July of 1993, Nirvana's Kurt Cobain was interviewed by respected British rock journalist Jon Savage in New York City. The interview wasn't published until years later, after Cobain's death, in a 1997 issue of Guitar World under the title Kurt Cobain: The Lost Interview.

Now, over 20 years after the original interview, PBS Digital Studios has put the interview together with animations of the subject matter and snippets of Nirvana songs "Smells Like Teen Spirit," "Pennyroyal Tea," "Love Buzz," and "Lithium" (acoustic), as well as the song "Bata Motel" by Crass.

It's an intriguing look into one of the most influential musicians of the past 50 years. Kurt opens up about his childhood, his family, his sexuality, his musical influences, his anger at the world during high school, his Irish / British heritage, and being happy starting a family with Courtney Love. One of the most interesting things musically is that Kobain shares his vocal technique of singing from his stomach, and actually using a painful medical condition to help him achieve the sound he wanted. Similarly, he blames his guitar for giving him a crooked back, but says that he's actually glad about that because it's helped his music. He was a tortured soul who gave everything to his art, and that's why he was able to move so many people.
