The Black Crowes, currently on their U.S. tour "Lay Down with Number 13, "ended their four night run at the New York City music venue Terminal 5 on Tuesday, October 29th, 2013. It's their first tour since recently ending a two-year hiatus. Having been a band and touring for 20+ years, the crowd was a mix of new fans who could barely grow facial hair to old fans who had been on board since the early 1990's. The vibe of the crowd was as expected: high, friendly and eager to get their shake on. The rock n roll band (consisting of Chris Robinson (lead vocals, guitar), Rich Robinson (guitar, vocals), Steve Gorman (drums), Sven Pipien (bass), Adam MacDougall (keyboards) and new member Jackie Greene (guitar, vocals) performed a 2+ hour show that reached deep inside their extensive songbook, performing a greatly varied set.

The night started out strong with the songs "Been A Long Time (Waiting On Love)," "Cypress Tree," and "A Train Still Makes A Lonely Sound." Everyone was singing along as front man Chris Robinson got his hip shake happening onstage. The first cover song of the night was The Rolling Stones mega hit "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and it REALLY got the crowd jumping! Making sure to keep the energy high on the next song, "Jealous Again" had us old time fans singing along and reliving the days when this hit was in constant rotation on radio playlists.

Up to this point the band hadn't really JAMMED out on any one song in particular, thus keeping the show flowing from one song to the next. That all changed when they played the next song "Wiser Time." It was here that members of the band got to display their musicianship on their respective instruments and gave us a chance to get lost in their solos. Adam MacDougall started off with his funky tickling of the keys that led into Jackie Greene taking the spotlight for a solo that traveled from soulfully slow to Eddie Van Halen'ish fast. Rich Robinson took the lead next and showed us his skills on the wah wah pedal while displaying a grandiose aura about him. It wasn't long until Jackie joined him and impressed us all with some back and forth guitar, trading licks before bringing the song down to a calm, majestic ending.

Chris Robinson is a talented singer with a voice fit for the style of music The Black Crowes play, but he can also contribute in other ways. The song "Wiser Time" featured Chris strumming the guitar and later demonstrating his harp skills. Rich and Jackie shared vocal duties for an impressive and rare live cover of The Kinks classic song "Powerman." The set ended with The Crowes showering us with the fan favorites "Soul Singing," "Hard To Handle," and "Hush." I've seen The Black Crowes a bunch of times and hearing these songs never gets old.

The band was gracious enough to come out and play a few more songs for an encore, and a helluva encore it was! After a few strummed chords it became apparent that they were playing the classic "Wild Horses" by The Rolling Stones. I'm pretty sure I wasn't the only one shocked and very psyched to hear this as smiles and wide open eyes appeared on a lot of faces in attendance. Those with a significant other held each other close while others put their hands in their pockets and swayed along to the tempo. The song lends itself to be a great encore choice and I was thankful to have heard The Crowes' version. The final song of the night, "The Last Time," concluded a trifecta of Rolling Stones covers and it had a great rock n roll beat that had the crowd dancing for one last time. This group has been around for decades and know how to please their fans with a great show, but did that last song purposely give us a hint that this could be their last time in NYC? I sure hope not.

The band recently released Wiser For The Time, which features a mammoth eight sides on four vinyl albums containing 26 songs–15 acoustic and 11 electric–from their five-night, sold-out NYC performances in the fall of 2010. These never-before-released versions are also available as a double album digital download. You can purchase this release in The Black Crowes Music and Media Store. Below you'll find a snippet of the song "Hush" as well as the show's set list for this night.
