Eddie Vedder: singer, songwriter, father... tamer of wild hippies? After Pearl Jam's show in Spokane, Washington on Saturday, it seems as if Vedder can now make claims to all of those titles. While onstage, the PJ frontman noticed a sign held by a dreadlocked crowd member that said something to the effect of, "I'll shave my head if you play 'Brain of J'" (making reference to Yield's opening track), and during the concert's encore, Vedder took the fan up on his offer.

After calling the man's dreads a "work of art" and asking if he was the one who "threw the joint onstage earlier," Vedder launched into "Brain of J," allowing the fan one last bout of headbanging with 12 years worth of hair still attached to his scalp. The ensuing minutes could be filed under both "heartfelt goodbye" and "flying spaghetti monster," as the audience member whipped his lengthy dreads like there was no tomorrow (because, in the case of his crusty locks, there wasn't). After completing most of his singing, Vedder then grabbed a pair of electric clippers and proceeded to cut dreadlocks off, one by one. It was a spectacle, akin to some sort of life-affirming version of the Full Metal Jacket opening sequence, and the rest of the crowd ate it up.

When Vedder finished, the fan held his rope-like trimmings aloft for all to see, marking what will undoubtedly be a very proud moment in his life, as well as his return to squaredom. To all Pearl Jam fans who are looking to get onstage: the ante has just been upped.
