In a segment for Jay Z's Life + Times outlet, Rap Radar's Elliott Wilson sat down with Q-Tip just before A Tribe Called Quest opened for Kanye West at Barclay's Center a few weeks ago. The two talked about Tribe's legacy, Tip's recent work with Busta Rhymes and West, and The Last Zulu, Tip's upcoming solo album. Watch the full interview above.
As longtime scholars of the rap game, Wilson and Tip both wax poetic about the two weeks in 1993 that bore not only ATCQ's Midnight Marauders, but also debut albums from The Wu-Tang Clan and Snoop Dogg, respectively. Tip reminisces on how much fun he had making Marauders, and compares it to a recent session he had with Rhymes that ended up producing the song "Thank You." The smooth-voiced Tip does a hilarious impression of the always-gruff Rhymes, sending Wilson into one of many giggle fits.
In a shockingly offhand remark, Tip mentions that he and Rick Rubin are co-producing Kanye West's new album, which West himself recently said is expected to drop next summer. Wilson mostly ignores that remark, opting instead to grill Tip on The Last Zulu, which the rapper says will be "darker," equating it to a "bad twin of Tribe."
