Nashville bar owner Chris Ferrell has been charged with second-degree murder in the killing of country singer Wayne Mills. The shooting took place at Ferrell's bar, Pit and Barrel, in downtown Nashville the night of November 23rd, but no arrests were made at the time and charges weren't brought against Ferrell until Friday, December 6th.

Mills was killed following an argument that allegedly stemmed from Mills smoking a cigarette inside a non-smoking section of the bar. Ferrell told police that he shot Mills in self-defense.

Police investigation is ongoing, but a grand jury indicted Ferrell on second-degree murder charges. Upon learning of the charges, Ferrell reportedly turned himself in.

“I have every intention of contesting this charge,” Ferrell's lawyer David Raybin said. “My client denies that he’s guilty of any degree of homicide.”

According to The Tennessean, this is not the first allegation of violence to come against Ferrell this year:

This summer, court records say, he was charged with domestic assault, interfering with an emergency call and vandalism stemming from an alleged fight with a former girlfriend.

The assault and interfering charges were later dismissed. The vandalism charge was bound over to the grand jury.

Mills, whose funeral services were held today, was the frontman of the Wayne Mills Band, a band active for more than 15 years. Country singer Blake Shelton, who shared the stage with Mills early on in his career, took to Twitter to express his feelings when he heard the news:

Mills was 44. For more information from the band, see their official Facebook.
