The United States Men's National Soccer Team has announced Grammy Award-winning recording artist Lupe Fiasco will work as the Music Director for this summer's World Cup taking place in Brazil.

Fiasco will collaborate with the team in a variety of areas during both the Send-Off Series and the FIFA World Cup. Lupe and his DJ collaborative SNDCLSH will be in charge of creating Spotify playlists for the team, and will be in charge of in-game music during the Send-Off Series. The Send-Off Series, a group of domestic games leading up to the World Cup, will include a matches versus Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Nigeria. The United States are heavy underdogs to have success in the FIFA tournament beginning June 12th, having drawn a tough first round group that includes Germany, Portugal, and Ghana.

In addition, United States Soccer will be working to promote Fiasco’s new single, “Mission,” during the Send-Off Series. The single, which is the first off of Lupe's upcoming fifth album Tetsuo & Youth, is about fighting and surviving cancer, was released on Monday.

It may come as a surprise to see Lupe Fiasco working side by side with an American nationalistic organization like U.S. Soccer. In 2011 Fiasco was admonished for calling Barrack Obama and the United States of America the world's two largest terrorist threats. In 2013 during President Obama's second inauguration, he was forcibly removed from the stage during a performance of his hit "Words I Never Said," because the song contained anti-Obama sentiments.
