Less than two years ago, Tinder was released and put a whole new spin on online dating. Instead of having to go out to bars, all you have to do is swipe left or right. Through this process, you can connect with potential partners and find your soulmate, or at least a companion for the night.

One of the co-founders of Tinder, Christopher Gulczynski, decided that if you can find the love of your life through the simple swipe of a finger, then you can find your musical soulmate in the same way. Many people describe finding their favorite band similar to finding love, so Gulczynski created an app identical to Tinder in almost every way, except that instead of judging users based on their appearance, you judge them based on their musical talent.

The musicians on Next range from indie bands with professional recordings to teenage girls singing covers in their bedrooms, but no matter their level, each artist is given the same opportunity: thirty seconds to perform a piece of music and win you over. If you like the artist, swipe right, and if you don't, swipe left.

"Being so close to Tinder, we liked the gamified feeling. The swiping mechanic is just a UI convention that we really like, but the core of it is everyone is given the same amount of attention," Gulczynski said. "If you get a few swipes left and get knocked off the list, you can upload as many videos as you want to. Got a great idea for a song? Just put it up there."

Next has the potential to be a great asset to many up-and-coming artists. When you swipe right, the app leads you to the artist's page where you can with them and their various media platforms. Next is not trying to compete with music services such as Spotify or SoundCloud, but rather it is trying to be another way to help music lovers find new artists.

So, if you are a struggling artist hoping to find new listeners or just trying to find your next favorite band, check out Next. Enjoy all the fun of swiping left or right, minus the unfortunate selfies and taglines.
