This month brought the arrival of a new juggernaut on Broadway: Dear Evan Hansen.
After debuting in Washington D.C. and going on to an acclaimed Off-Broadway run earlier this year, the original musical, featuring a score by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land, A Christmas Story), is now making waves on the Great White Way.
Directed by Michael Greif (Rent), Dear Evan Hansen tells the story of the title character, a high school senior battling anxiety and depression who writes letters to himself as part of a therapy assignment — and the events that unfold when one of those letters is found in the possession of a fellow student who took his own life.
Taking on the role of Evan Hansen is actor Ben Platt, best known for his work in the Pitch Perfect films. In a landscape of musicals adapted from existing properties, Vulture notes that Dear Evan Hansen stands out for being an original tale, based on an incident from composer Pasek’s own youth.
The musical received high praise from critics upon its December Broadway debut: New York Times critic Charles Isherwood celebrated the show as a “gorgeous heartbreaker of a musical” and raved that Platt’s performance is “not likely to be bettered on Broadway this season,” while David Rooney of the Hollywood Reporter described the musical as a “smart, soulful depiction of teen solitude graced by both gentle humor and raw feeling.”
In a review for the Huffington Post, critic Steven Suskin wrote, “[Dear Evan Hansen] is a show that captures your attention immediately, enchants you with its characters and its songs, pulls you through emotional turbulence, and leaves you cheering and wanting to go back for more.”
