Budding St. Louis superstar SZA has released a new single on the heels of her debut record, Ctrl, which premiered this past June. Check out "Quicksand" above, via Spotify.

A polished fusion of R&B, trap, and disco sensibilities amid an interspersed positioning of funky pauses, the song is a varied addition to SZA's early and impressive canon. Smooth synths wave loosely under a sharp hip hop beat in the verses, while glossy brass contributes a punctuated precision to the more rigid rhythmic pattern in the chorus.

Taking on issues of romantic commitment and communication, SZA sings, "Should I assume you didn't mean it like that? Or should I assume you know exactly how you said it? You know exactly how you meant it, Should I assume it's me, sweet disposition, Switchin' position, duckin' submission, Or should I assume it's a weekend thing, boy?... Ooh-ooh, so hard to love (so hard), Darling, you make it too hard to trust, You keep running from me, I'm scared of love."

"Quicksand" follows SZA's recent collaboration with Maroon 5 on their new single "What Lovers Do," and was officially released as part of the Insecure: Music From The HBO Original Series, Season 2 soundtrack. Order a copy of the album on Amazon
