"Shapeshifter I: Construct" - TAUK [Spotify Full Album Stream + Zumic Review]

When describing TAUK's music, many different elements and styles come to mind. The ability to weave different genres into a single song and leave you curious to where it's heading is what makes TAUK stand out in the congested jamband scene. The instrumental EP Shapeshifter I: Construct, released today, demonstrates TAUK's diverse sound and impressive chops.

The opening song, "Square 2," begins with an upbeat prog rock feel, before horns bring in a jazzy vibe. "Premises" shifts to a reggae guitar-bass-drum pattern while incorporating interesting changes over the course of 6 minutes with strong lead work from Jalbert and Carter. A funky bass lays the foundation in "For Laughing out Loud," which is colored by unpredictable melodies.

The second half of the EP gets even more experimental. "Stranger Danger" combines the funky with psychedelic rock, and closing track "Malware" uses a variety of heavy prog rock riffs to develop a sense of tension-and-release.  Over the course of the five songs, there is a great balance between intricately calculated performances and mellow moments that leave you wanting more.

TAUK continue to push the boundaries of their songs by exploring diverse genres while challenging themselves. If you like your music to be more conventional and repetitive, then this EP isn't for you.
