Phantogram have released a double single featuring one original song, “Someday,” and one Sparklehorse cover, “Saturday.”  All proceeds from the release will benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, inspired by the 2016 suicide of Becky Barthel, sister of Phantogram’s Sarah Barthel.

"Saturday" by Phantogram (Sparklehorse Cover)

"Someday" is a beautiful threnody from Sarah to her sister, reflecting on and processing her loss.  She sings, "I'm always gonna miss you / I'm always gonna feel you / In everything that I do."  Among a horn-heavy R&B instrumentation, Barthel's lyrics cut powerfully.

The Sparklehorse cover, "Saturday," balances as a more abstract song of sweet devotion.  Sarah breathily croons, "I'd walk to hell and back / To see you smile / On Saturday."  The track was likely recorded for the crowdfunded Sparklehorse / Mark Linkous tribute albumLast Box of Sparklers — aiming to raise mental health awareness after Linkous' death by suicide in 2010.  The album was finished but sadly never released because of intervention from Linkous' estate.

On Wednesday, Phantogram accepted the Public Awareness award from the AFSP at the organization's annual LifeSavers Gala.  Via their official Twitter, the band shared a video of their acceptance speech, adding, "Love to each and every one of you today and every day."
