Justin Timberlake dropped a surprise single earlier this week, ringing in the early days of summer. Listen to "SoulMate" above, via YouTube.
“SoulMate” is a little different than anything Timberlake has done in the past. He has been known for combining pop, R&B, electronic, and hip-hop, but this song put more of a housey tropical vibe than anything he has done before. Polyrhythmic layered percussion maintains a danceable yet breezy flow throughout the track, while solid bass and sleek synth lay a solid foundation for Timberlake to go on acrobatic vocal runs.
Timberlake is already out on tour in conjunction with his 2018 album, Man of the Woods, which was his first since The 20/20 Experience in 2013. This one-off single has a feel-good sound and infectious groove, similar to his unexpected 2016 hit "Can't Stop the Feeling!" — which was his most recent #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The song was recorded in the Bahamas and produced by Nineteen85, who is best known for his work with Drake. The subtle chipmunk vocal, "wannabe" hook, and overall sexiness of the track are reminiscent of Twista's 2003 hit "Slow Jamz" produced by Kanye West and featuring Jamie Foxx. Just a coincidence, or a conscious decision? Either way, this should be a good one for DJs to play this summer.
