West Virginia metalcore band Zao have premiered a new track "Hide From the Light," from their upcoming split release with Yashira.  The two bands will be heading out on tour together this month.

Drawing on the classic metalcore sound Zao helped to popularize over the past 20-plus years, the new single stands in line with the majority of their catalog — albeit in a slightly more accessible way.  It does not have the sudden time changes or the faster tempo of their earlier work, but still sticks to the origins of the genre while the rhythm section gives the rest of the band a bit more room to breathe.  Doubtless, the riffs and vocals are more Converge than Bring Me the Horizon and there are enough breakdowns scattered throughout to satisfy fans.

The lyrics, while departing from the Christian themes of their earlier work, focus on something just as typical of metalcore — criticizing society and thought control.  In a statement about the song, vocalist Dan Weyandt said, “‘Hide From The Light‘ is a reference to the light beaming out of our handheld electrical devices and that light’s ability to manipulate our thoughts and actions personally, as well as society as a whole, via digital social platforms.”

Not quite groundbreaking, but regardless, the band delivers their niche and shows that they are still in good form more than 20 years and no original members later.
