Low has premiered the video for "Always Trying To Work It Out" from their 2018 LP Double Negative.  It is streaming above via YouTube.

"Always Trying To Work It Out" is exemplary of the group's greater incorporation of electronics into their minimalist dream-pop / slowcore sound since 2015's Ones and Sixes.  While their typically sparse guitars and drums are still incorporated to a degree, the ethereal atmosphere on this track is primarily created through beats, synths, and effects.  With these new sonic tools in their palette, Low sounds as immersive and intense as ever.

A welcome expansion on their original sound, "Always Trying To Work It Out" (and the rest of Double Negative) is the some of the most interesting work Low has created in years.  Perhaps sensing that the tried-and-true formula they have been using since the '90s has run dry, they provide a change of pace for fans while still retaining the compositional elements they have made their trademark.

The video, directed by Philip Harder and vocalist Alan Sparhawk, features the band performing in front of a blue LED backdrop interspersed with scenes of Sparhawk walking through a supermarket.  Around him, the other customers are wearing masks identical to the one featured on the cover of Double Negative.

Sparhawk shed light on the meaning of the video in a Subpop press release, in which he stated, "We present our slightly Halloween-themed video for ‘Always Trying to Work It Out.’  In which… friends and family star in a stroll through the grocery store; familiar fragments from memory appear; masks are filtering light."  While there is no suggestion as to what exactly that means, it does not seem like there will be an explanation any time soon.

Double Negative is available now via Amazon and major streaming services.

Low will be touring North America and Europe throughout March.  For more information and concert tickets, check out their Zumic artist page.
