Asking Alexandria have released an action-packed, horror-themed music video for their new single "The Violence."
The video turns the classic zombie apocalypse trope on its head, showing the undead watching horror flicks like "Day of the Living" during their otherwise normal lives. The climax of the video shows a crew of zombies, led by the band's vocalist Danny Worsnop, as they gun down droves of vicious humans.
Musically, the track has been met with mixed responses from fans. In the YouTube comments, many feel that the band has leaned too far from their hardcore roots in favor of a softer, more mainstream sound. Some have also called out that the song's main guitar riff for being virtually identical to the one in Jaden Smith's 2017 track "Watch Me."
Since Asking Alexandria hit the scene in 2006, their sound has clearly changed — and they are standing by their work. In a widely circulated statement, Ben Bruce shared his enthusiasm:
We are back bigger, better, louder and more insane than ever before. This single encompasses everything we have been working towards. Huge guitars, anthemic drums and some of the catchiest, most technically accomplished vocals that Danny has ever delivered, and this is only just the beginning.
Leading up to the release of the song and video, the band spent weeks dropping cryptic hints on their Twitter page. The most ominous of these clues was a distorted video of a vintage TV with a phone number to "call now" that gave listeners a snippet of music with an eerie public service announcement. The interaction with their fans on social media that followed, in conjunction with the elements of the video, ended up creating an immersive experience while blurring the lines between art and reality.
