Ducktails, the ambient pop rock solo project of Real Estate's Matthew Mondanile, is streaming their new EP, Wish Hotel, via Pitchfork Advance. Set to drop October 22nd, Wish Hotel is the second release this year for Ducktails, following their fourth studio album The Flower Lane.

The album is a laid-back stream of consciousness. Opener "Tie-Dye" has the aesthetic of a warm jazz performance, with a spacey synthesizer overlaid on top that trades licks with a distorted guitar. Mondanile's vocals are as carefree and dreamlike as ever, a quiet whisper with enough reverb to fill a room.

The title track, "Wish Hotel," is a little bit quicker, with surf-rock guitar riffs dominating the soundscape, with simple drums and bass keeping the song comfortably grounded through loud synthesizer hooks.

Wish Hotel is eclectic compared to The Flower Lane and more willing to distance itself from the surf sound that made Mondanile's Real Estate so notable. The constant synthesizer is loud and unapologetic, giving the smooth jazzy tones a sharp accent. While fans of The Flower Lane might be put off by the wide range of different, jarring sounds, the EP as a whole is a distinguished piece of work, not afraid to venture into new territory for the group.
