There are actually 2 versions of Paul McCartney's New album, the standard 12-track in red and the deluxe 14-track in blue. Other than additional bonus tracks, the only difference we've found is that "Road" is 3 minutes shorter on the deluxe album (blue) than the standard (red). Choose your flavor below:
New, Paul McCartney's first proper studio album in six years (not counting his covers collection and collaborative album with Youth) is now streaming on Spotify.
With an aggregate score of 77 on Metacritic, critical reception of New has been quite positive thus far. Part of that may be due to McCartney successfully outfitting his old sounds with new bells and whistles. "Appreciate," for instance, features a hip-hop-esque beat and eerily warped keyboards, but its pop structure and melodies scream old-school McCartney. If stripped of its effects and performed with standard rock instruments, it would be a good deal less interesting, but could pass for a much older Wings track.
The inclusion of modern flourishes varies from song to song on New, but the end result of such a formula should be satisfactory to fans of all ages, as there's something here for everybody. Whether it's the weird minimalism of "Looking at Her," or the baroque pop of "Alligator," something will catch your ear. McCartney's been charming the world for 50 years, and he's clearly not about to stop.
McCartney began promoting New three months ago with the release of its title track as a single. A month later, he debuted “Everybody Out There” at iHeartRadio Music Festival, and continued to promote the album on Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon's respective shows. Most recently, he played surprise concerts in Times Square and on Hollywood Boulevard, leading up to the release of the album on October 11th.
