The American Music Awards were held last night in Los Angeles, and though Kendrick Lamar lost to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis in the "Hip-Hop Album of the Year" category, the hometown hero triumphantly performed a medley of "Swimming Pools" and "Poetic Justice" with some assistance from new TDE signee SZA.
SZA, clad in oversized overall shorts, looked a little shellshocked onstage, but her smooth singing said otherwise. She has far more vocal presence than Anna Wise (who sung backup on both of the original tracks), and her unique style is certainly a good fit for TDE, a label that prides itself on veering from hip-hop's rigid norms.
The performance also prompted some of the worst "Thizzle Dance" attempts I've ever seen from the crowd, who are probably causing Mac Dre to violently roll around in his grave as we speak.
