Tinashe is an R&B singer who was recently signed to RCA. Her 2013 mixtape Black Water obviously attracted the attention of some industry heavy-hitters, because her new single features ScHoolboy Q and was produced by DJ Mustard, who are both currently (to paraphrase Mr. West) "poppin' wheelies on a zeitgeist." When compared with Tinashe's independent material, "2 On" is definitely her biggest attempt at a club banger, with countless references to alcohol, weed and money. There are also a ton of hashtag-ready allusions to other hip-hop songs, such as "on one," "get faded," "live fast die young," "turn up" and "pour it up." Ok, Tinashe, we get it, you want to be on the radio. The good news is, "2 On" is dope enough to get there on its own merits, namely DJ Mustard's loopy production (those string flourishes during verse two are so choice) and a characteristically substance-centric verse from Q.
There's no word on a debut album by Tinashe yet, but when it comes, you can be sure that "2 On" will be included.
