Angel Olsen is a Chicago-based singer-songwriter whose debut album, Half Way Home, received a bunch of critical praise in 2012. For her new one, Burn Your Fire For No Witness, she's linked up with a backing band to beef up her sound, which is immediatly audible in "Hi-Five." Stream it above.
Like previous Burn Your Fire... track "Forgiven/Forgotten," "Hi-Five" is a crunchy rocker, albeit one with a more folk-rocky sound to it. Led by a piano and a fuzzed-out electric guitar, Olsen launches into the tale of a relationship gone sour, wailing with raggedly impressive fervor. Moving from weirdly romantic lines like, "We'll keep our hands, our legs, even our lips apart, but I'm giving you my heart" to the defeatist conclusion, "I'm stuck with you," Olsen sounds both world-weary and whiskey-soaked. I can dig it.
