British youth phenom Jake Bugg just finished up a whirlwind 2013 in which he recorded an album with Rick Rubin that ended up topping the U.K. charts, and now he's back in 2014 with a live performance on WNYC's Soundcheck program. The 19-year-old performed the songs "Slumville Sunrise," "Me & You" and "Song About Love," and also gave an interview during the 22-minute-long show, all of which you can listen to above.

During the interview, host Jon Schaefer struggled to understand how such a young dude arrived at a "classic, early rock and roll, rockabilly kind of sound." Bugg responded matter-of-factly, "Well, I listen to a lot of old music. I don't really like a lot of contemporary records, per se." That makes a lot of sense, as Bugg's music could believably be a relic from the '60s, even the early, pre-electric-Dylan '60s. Instead of finding music through more youth-oriented channels, Bugg said most of his early experiences with music came from his mother's record collection. Granted, he didn't like everything she had (unsurprisingly, Bugg's not so hot on boy bands), but for every dud, there was a Donovan record that he ended up loving.

Soundcheck also posted a YouTube video with footage culled from Bugg's visit, entitled "3 Questions with Jake Bugg" (below). In it, Bugg fields questions about his first NYC show, his size preferences for venues, and his pre-gig rituals.
