"State of Mine" - Sebadoh [Official Music Video]

Sebadoh have just released the official video for "State of Mine," a cut from Defend Yourself, which was released last September. The Lou Barlow-fronted band reunited last year after having released nothing since 1999.

It's unsurprising, then, that Barlow's writing has evolved to deal with the struggles of growing older. The Geoff Hoskinson-directed clip confronts the American existential crisis head on, bringing to life the clash with cookie-cutter suburbia, while the song's wistful and introspective lyrics examine failure and parenthood. "Failure is a state of mine," he sings during the chorus. It's an honest look at what it means to get older, and speaks volumes about Barlow's maturation as a songwriter.

Speaking to NPR about the video, director Geoff Hoskinson had this to say:

"The main idea for the video was to visualize the archetypal family man in a disjointed reality. I wanted to juxtapose images of the archetype with images of various landscapes to play off of the lyrical pun of being in different 'states.' A lot of the images are visual metaphors that are inspired by the lyrics."
