Gianni Lee and Mike Blud, the guys behind previous mixes that compiled the samples from Yeezus, Take Care, and good kid, m.A.A.d. city, have returned to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Kanye West's landmark debut album. "College Dropout: The Samples" is a 70+ minute mix that features 12 songs that Kanye sampled, and two that he interpolated in various tracks on his 2004 album. Tune in above.
Unlike a similar mix made by Chris Read for the 20th anniversary of A Tribe Called Quest's Midnight Marauders, "College Dropout: The Samples" doesn't blend original songs with the songs that sampled them, opting instead to let the original songs play out in their entirety. In some cases, the portion of the song that Kanye chose to sample is a very small snippet (for example, the voice yelling "nigger!" at the beginning of the Curtis Mayfield song), and in others, the original song acted as more of a blueprint for his tinkering (such as The Arc Choir's "Walk With Me"). The two hip-hop songs in the mix, 2Pac's "Ambitionz of a Ridah" and Jay Z's "Hovi Baby" remix, contained lyrics that were interpolated on College Dropout, namely "I can't deny it, I'm a straight ridah" and "First I had the streets, then I had the charts."
