When Jimmy Fallon took over the Tonight Show last month, he brought along The Roots as the house band, as well as the sketch “Freestylin’ with The Roots,” which first appeared in 2009 on The Late Show with Jimmy Fallon.

The Roots debuted the familiar sketch on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last night. The routine involved Jimmy Fallon approaching audience members with questions and The Roots creating songs based on the answers.

The band showed off their hip-hop roots when prompted by Fallon to play a Pharrell-esque groove, as well as proving their range by improvising genres that stretched from a disco jam to an Irish drinking song. Lead MC Black Thought quickly created lyrics that echoed the quips of Fallon and the responses of the audience members.
