To the surprise of many, Wolfmother released the album New Crown yesterday. You can listen to the whole thing for free above, and buy it through their Bandcamp page. You can also find the lyrics to all the songs on the Bandcamp page.

The album has a very raw sound to it. Especially songs like "Feelings" and "I Ain't Got No" that seem to pull equally from heavy metal, punk, and traditional hard rock styles of music. Loud guitars and drums dominate the record, with virtually no keyboards to be heard. Sludgy riffs and distorted vocals make for an album that is true to the band's identity. From the opening song, "How Many Times," the old school guitar rock blistering licks are front and center. The beginning of the record is very riff heavy, while the middle of the record gets a little more punk influenced as the band plays more straight forward grooves. Toward the end of the record, "My Tangerine Dream" features trippy production and a coda section that's a complete change-up as it combines country folk with an acid trip.

You can hear a similar sound to groups like Black Sabbath, Iggy & The Stooges, and Motörhead. New Crown may not be the most original rock album of the year, but well executed and a good listen for people who like classic hard rock.

Wolfmother's last album was released in 2009, although frontman Andrew Stockdale released an album called Keep Moving during June of 2013 while the band was at a creative low point. The Stockdale album was a success, and helped bring the band back together to record the songs for New Crown.
