In case you didn't hear, Raekwon is on strike from the Wu-Tang Clan because he's add odds with RZA, with the de facto leader of the group. Their next album, A Better Tomorrow, was expected to be released in July, but now RZA is saying that unless Raekwon is on board, it may never be released. In case you're wondering, this is completely different from the one copy Once Upon A Time In Shaolin album, which will supposedly be touring through listening parties soon and then going up for auction.
Amidst all the news and controversy surrounding him, Raekwon turned up at The Acheron in Bushwick (aka East Williamsburg), Brooklyn last night. He performed 5 songs, starting with "C.R.E.A.M." and "Ice Cream." He actually spat more lines originally by other members than he did of his own material. He gave props to his "homegirl" Celeste for inviting him, and she can be seen hanging out on stage through most of his set. From there, Raekwon kept the classics coming with "Protect Ya Neck," as he rapped the song basically straight through. This was followed by Ol' Dirty Bastard's "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" and finally "Triumph" - although it was a little awkward watching him sing along with the verses from the original album - he cut off the last song during the 3rd verse, as the energy level had fallen off considerably.
It's a little bit of a strange performance, but you can see Raekwon's still got some fire in his belly. Now, if only the Wu-Tang Clan could get some killer new beats...
