tUnE-yArDs are getting ready to release Nikki Nack, on May 5th through 4AD Records. Now, you can stream the entire album above.

Nikki Nack is a potpourri of classic rock, American blues-folk, doo-wop, R&B, African beats and new wave. The album begins with the fluttering harpsichord of "Find a New Way," opening the album like a curtain being pulled back at the start of a play. It bursts with color as the tribal drums bang franticly. The next track, "Water Fountain," is even more spastic than the first song, with its glitchy bleeps and zaps. Frontwoman Merill Garbus describes the track perfectly on the song's bridge, belting out, "Listen to the words I say! Sound like a floral bouquet! A lyrical round-and-round-and-round-and-round." "Hey Life" may be the best display of her quirky lyricism, singing lines like, "yakity-yack, I can't tell my brain to not talk back" and "One two three o'clock four o'clock walk and talk and talk and walk." This shows Garbus using her voice as the album's primary instrument, making Nikki Nack one of the most unique albums of the year so far.

Another standout is "Rocking Chair," which has an early 20th century southern blues-folk style. It's easy to picture Garbus singing this on a porch while an old man plays the fiddle in said rocking chair. It's short and sweet, but is perhaps the most interesting track on the album. Listen to the entire album above.
