Shabazz Palaces, an avant-garde hip hop duo from Seattle, will soon return with their sophomore album. Entitled Lese Majesty (a play on “Lèse-majesté," the French term for “injured majesty,” or crimes against the crown), the 18-track LP will be released via Sub Pop on July 29th, and today, the group's shared a track from it. Stream "They Come in Gold" above.

Beginning with a choppy vocal sample and Shabazz Palaces' signature blend of tribal and electronic percussion, "They Come in Gold" then unfolds into a Midas-style tale of vanity, visages of wealth and kneeling before idols, courtesy of Palaceer Lazaro. The MC and multi-instrumentalist, also one of the founding members of Digable Planets, continues to hone his verbal prowess, with his lyrics tending to find the perfect balance between cryptic and quotable. He mostly speaks in ancient and / or spiritual terms, but always manages to incorporate hip hop vernacular to keep things tied to the present -- for example: "One picture's worth a thousand swerves."

It will be hard for Lese Majesty to measure up to 2011's fantastic Black Up, but if "They Come in Gold" offers any hints, it's that this new album will be just as thought-provoking and hypnotic as its predecessor. Fittingly, Shabazz Palaces premiered it a few weeks ago at the Pacific Science Center's Laser Dome, with the performance prompting mainstay Seattle publication The Stranger to call the album "the future of hip hop."
