While at Coachella last month, the Arcade Fire shot a music video for the song "We Exist," off of their most recent album Reflektor. The video features Andrew Garfield portraying a transgender woman who is trying to gain acceptance for who she is. Watch it above.

The video opens with Garfield in front of a mirror, looking melancholy as he shaves his head and tries to find something to wear. However, when he puts on a wig, his demeanor changes and he begins to feel more confident. All dressed up, she walks to a nearby dive bar, where she sits anxiously, looking around as everyone stares at her. The video takes its first turn against Garfield's character as a man asks her to dance, but only as a rouse to jump her and beat her up, leaving her in a daze.

The second half of the video takes a turn for the inspirational. The protagonist shows off some highly impressive and passionate dance moves during a dream-like, psychedelic dance sequence and she encounters gay men who dance for her. They eventually lead her toward a doorway that opens up at Coachella during Arcade Fire's set. The final scene is especially powerful, as Garfield's character climbs on stage as Arcade fire are performing "We Exist" and receives a huge applause.

Vocalist Win Butler has stated that he wrote the song about a gay man coming out to his father and struggling for acceptance, and the video connects to his premise effectively. Whenever the band performs the song live, he introduces it by saying "The right to marry anyone you want is a human rights issue."
