Sharon Van Etten's album Are We There is officially due out but right now you can get the advance stream through iTunes. Promoting the album, she stopped by WNYC SoundCheck to perform three songs with her band and talk with host John Schaefer. Check it out above or download the podcast.

Van Etten began with the song "Tarifa" - a song about driving to the southernmost point in Spain with her boyfriend and staying in a houseboat on Gibralter.

She discussed some of the other gigs she's had in the music business, including managing Jonathan Meiburg's tour and backup singing in Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

Van Etten's second performance is John Schaefer's favorite from the album, "Taking Changes." The song is dark, with a modern indie vibe that combines electronic synth with overdriven guitar. Her vocal shines above the churning rock backdrop. The final song, "Break Me," is a little more upbeat, but it's also a slow burning melodic tune that has shades of operatic pop singer Florence Welch.

To close out the interview, Sharon talked about playing The Stone Pony in her native New Jersey and growing up as a huge Bruce Springsteen fan. She recently covered The Boss's "Drive All Night" for The AV Club.
