Raymond Raposa, the only consistent member of the band Castanets, was a staple of the freak-folk scene between 2003 and 2009. His last release was 2009's Texas Rose, The Thaw, and The Beasts. Now though, on August 19th, he will release a new album entitled Decimation Blues on Asthmatic Kitty Records. Listen to the first single, "Out For The West," above.

"Out For The West" shows an change in musical styles for Raposa, instead of a psychedelic-influenced folk jam, the song moves in an electronic direction. There is a groovy piano and drum beat throughout, and Raposa throws in some horns to give it a little bit of a jazzy feel. The lyrics are actually three distinct vignettes about buying a Vanity Fair in a store, the end of a Portland Trailblazers game that they won in overtime, and some musings on the gold rush. It's a unique take on electronic music and a great comeback song from the band.

Decimation Blues will be released on Asthmatic Kitty August 18th. For more information on Castanets, including news, music and tour dates check out the Asthmatic Kitty website.
