Over the past two years, Waka Flocka Flame has gone from a guilty pleasure to a top-tier rapper in the highly-competitive southern rap game. When Waka's first big single, "O Let's Do It," came out in 2009, it seemed that Gucci Mane had found himself a protege that rapped as goofily and unintelligibly as he did. After Flocka's street anthem "Hard in the Paint," it appeared he was a quintessential hype-rapper, screaming over trendy Lex Lugar production. Even after "No Hands" went triple-platinum, most hip hop fans didn't seem to perceive Waka as a talent, nor a serious player in the rap game. His debut album, Flockaveli, sold over a whopping 370,000 copies. But after his 2012 follow up, Triple F Life: Fans, Friends & Family, failed to crack 80,000, it appeared Waka Flocka was flaming out.

However, since 2013, WFF has turned a new page, which he showcases on his brand new mixtape, I Can't Rap Vol. 1. Like the mixtapes he has released in the past few years, on I Can't Rap Vol. 1 Waka Flocka Flame is far more lyrically nifty than we would expect from him. Although he's said many times that he's not a rapper, we're gonna have to respectfully disagree.

The mixtape is comprised of 20 songs and features Troy Ave, Ron Browz, BJ the Chicago Kid, and Young Scooter. Despite the lack of big name features, Waka comfortably carries the load with a tasteful smattering of original tracks and remixes of popular hip hop songs. One of the highlights is a remix of the DJ Khaled posse cut "Love You No More," where Waka raps with a fervent energy that the original song does not possess. Other highlights are "3 Gold Chains," featuring Troy Ave, "Trap Hop," the Mike WiLL Made It-produced "Slippin," and Flocka's remixes of Yo Gotti's "I Know," Drake's "0 to 100," and Kanye West's "Blood On The Leaves."

As it is labeled as a first volume, it appears there will be future installments of the ironically titled mixtapes. Waka’s debut EDM album, Turn Up God, will come out this fall, and Flockaveli 2 is expected to follow it in the winter.
