Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi joined Widespread Panic onstage at the First Merit Bank Pavilion in Chicago last month for a southern-tinged blues rock cover of James Carr's "Dark End of the Street."
Widespread Panic uploaded a video onto their YouTube account earlier today of the Tedeschi Trucks band founders rehearsing the Carr classic with them backstage, before showing into the actual performance. The transition occurs over Derek Trucks' slide solo and the change from hearing the 35-year-old slide virtuoso play his Gibson guitar unplugged, to fully electrified, is both evocative and exhilarating.
The augmented band ripped through the cover with Tedeschi and Panic frontman John Bell trading vocal responsibilities. The guitars wailed as Trucks, Bell, Tedeschi, and Panic lead guitarist Jimmy Herring each got to show off their chops.
Tedeschi and Trucks stayed on stage to jam on a Van Morrison tune, as well as closing out the set with a Robert Johnson cover. A fan-shot video of the entire collaborative performance was uploaded to YouTube by user Markusss427.
