On August 5th, Austin rockers Spoon released their highly anticipated 8th studio album, They Want My Soul, and are currently on tour to support the record. They recently stopped by KEXP to play an extended set and you can check it out above.
The band played a nine-song set, playing three songs from They Want My Soul, then reaching back into their discography for the others. Spoon are extremely polished musicians with tight instrumentals and plenty of room for jam sessions. Their songs are also diverse. They played the rocking and rolling "Rhthm & Soul" and followed it up with the keyboard heavy, atmospheric, and skeletal "The Ghost Of You Lingers." The tracks from the new record sound upbeat, jubilant, and vibrant. It is clear after this performance that Spoon are as strong as ever.
During the interview, the band talked about their 4-year hiatus, and recording the album with Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev producer Dave Fridmann. During the time between records, lead vocalist Britt Daniel said he took a three-month break from music before forming supergroup Divine Fits. They concluded with a story about getting together with their new producer this past winter and watching LaserDiscs.
You can watch the music video for the song "Do You" right here on Zumic. They Want My Soul is out now on Loma Vista Recordings and is available on iTunes and Amazon. For the latest on Spoon, including news, music, and upcoming tour dates check out their Zumic artist page.
