Public Enemy performed a cut off their seminal album Yo! Bum Rush the Show last night on The Tonight Show with Questlove and Black Thought from The Roots. Watch their performance of "Public Enemy No. 1" above, via YouTube.
The song samples "Blow Your Head" by Fred Wesley & The J.B.'s (James Brown's backing band in the '70s). Additionally, we see Questlove playing drums on the track, next to a pecussionist and a couple DJs. It's pretty true to the original, except this live version sounds cleaner -- rare for a live hip hop performance, but these are seasoned veterans. Also, Flavor Flav doesn't do the outro section to the song.
The performance was to spread the word about Def Jam Records' 30th Anniversary Box Set, which is now available. The 6-LP box set was curated by Def Jam co-founder, Rick Rubin.
