Today, MC Lyte, one of the pioneers of hip hop, has released the video to her empowering single "Dear John." The track will be featured on her upcoming LP, the first since 2003. set to be released before the year is over. She has not released an album since 2003 but her hiatus is coming to an end. The single, which feature Common and rapper 10Beats, was debuted last month.
Don't let the funky bassline fool you when the song starts. The beat is masked by soulful lyrics and deep messages. Lyte is writing a letter to all black men expressing her support during their times of struggle. The video does not feature MC Lyte, Common, or 10Beats, but instead various pictures of famous black male figures and fathers spending time with their kids. "Dear John" is the anthem of the #EducateOURmen movement started by MC Lyte's Hip Hop Sisters Foundation, which aids in sending young black men to historically black colleges.
