Holy shit. Faith No More just released their first new song in 17 years and it's nothing short of magnificent.

"Motherfucker" -- recorded at the band's Oakland studio with bassist Bill Gould on production -- is the first single from their as-yet untitled upcoming record. The song is a slow-burning assault, with creeping layers of noise climbing up around Mike Patton's soaring, doubled vocals. With no outside labels or influence, the band was able to record the album exactly as they wanted it, and the result is pretty kickass.

Keyboard player Roddy Bottum spoke about the track in a press release:

It feels apt that the first track we’re releasing is "Motherfucker," a song about accountability. Basically we’ve created, recorded and mixed a new body of work by ourselves and we’re releasing it on our own label. It’s a huge deal for us to only have ourselves to answer to at this point in our career and the song is about that, where the buck stops via the basic imagery of foie gras production, bondage… y’know, stuff like that.

"Motherfucker" will be released as a limited edition 7-inch single for Record Store Day's Black Friday event on November 28th, with a digital release following on December 9th. The B-side will be a remix of the track by experimental Australian artist JG Thirlwell, the man behind the score for The Venture Bros.

The song will also land on Faith No More's first full length record since 1997's Album of the Year, which is due out in April of 2015. Bill Gould spoke with Rolling Stone about the new material:

... I think what we're doing reflects where we've gone since we made our last record as Faith No More. I think this kicks things up a notch. And I think there's parts that are very powerful and there's parts that have a lot of "space." Everything we do, with our chemistry, the way we play; it's always going to sound like us. It's just what we do, that makes us feel good. Hopefully it doesn't sound like a bunch of 50-year-old men... which we are!
