Metallica reached the halfway point of their weeklong residency on The Late Late Show with a performance of their 1984 classic "For Whom The Bell Tolls."

The metal giants performed their Ride The Lightning hit with the same intensity and flash they bring to their sold-out live arena shows. Each band member showed off their fierce playing ability by pouring every ounce of energy into the performance. Robert Trujillo did the late Cliff Burton justice with a flawless rendition his iconic bass intro. For comparison, watch Metallica perform "For Whom The Bell Tolls" live in Oakland in 1985.

Drummer Lars Ulrich spoke with Rolling Stone back in July to talk about Ride The Lightning, which turned 30 this year.

Obviously it holds up very well. There's kind of a youthful energy that runs through the record. A good portion of these songs are still staples of our live set. And between "For Whom the Bell Tolls," "Creeping Death," "Fade to Black," and "Ride the Lightning," that's not a bad batting average.

The band's appearance on the show is partially to support the special edition Blu-ray release of their 2004 documentary, Some Kind Of Monster. But more than that, Metallica's residency is serving to help send off long-time host Craig Ferguson, who will be leaving The Late Late Show December 19th.

The special edition two-disc Some Kind Of Monster reissue comes out November 24th, but you can pre-order it now on Amazon (DVD, Blu-ray).
