Last night, Birmingham, Alabama soul group St. Paul and the Broken Bones brought the house down on The Late Show with David Letterman. Watch their rousing performance above.

Things start with a classically awkward David Letterman telling the band, "I want this to be like the first time. I tell ya something, a true story: the first time I heard this song, I was screaming until I cried..." In a back-and-forth with the band, we learn that Wilson Pickett's "634-5789" inspired the lyrics to "Call Me."

The performance lives up to the billing. The band plays with great energy, and Janeway's dancing is just as great as his vocals. You can hear and see the influence of old school R&B acts like Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, and Otis Redding in this performance. It's so good that Letterman makes them keep playing after they finish the song.

On their Facebook page, the band shared this status:

It is safe to say that yesterday was one of our favorite moments that this band has ever experienced. It was definitely a dream to play on the Late Show with David Letterman. We can not thank the good folks at the Late Show with David Letterman enough for being so kind and accommodating all day.
