Jamband vets Gov't Mule have shared their cover version of the funk classic, "Pass The Peas," which will be featured on their upcoming album with jazz guitarist John Scofield titled Sco-Mule. Listen above, via SoundCloud.

Sco-Mule is an archival two-disc live album recorded in the cities of Atlanta and Athens in 1999 with Scofield as a guest. Here's what Gov't Mule's official website says:

In late September of 1999, John Scofield teamed with Gov’t Mule, then featuring original bass player the late Allen Woody, in Georgia for two legendary shows. These shows were recorded with the intention of it being a live release after the studio album Life before Insanity. After the passing of Woody, and the start of The Deep End project, those plans had been set aside.

Asking the crowd if they can get funky, Gov't Mule take the song and breathe new life into it. Electrified guitars replace the horn section while bassist Allen Woody lays down a thick groove. A colorful keyboard solo brings the song to its familiar rhythm before John Scofield lends his jazz abilities for a lengthy guitar solo. Not missing a beat, Warren Haynes takes over for a mind-expanding solo that elevates "Pass The Peas" to energized heights. The band settles back into a groove and finishes the song to a thunderous applause.

The instrumental song was first recorded in 1972 by the J.B.'s, who were James Brown's backing band. The original version is a funk masterpiece that's full of horns, led by Fred Wesley's trombone solos.

Sco-Mule will be released on January 27th, 2015, and is available for pre-order on Amazon (Vinyl, CD) and iTunes.

Gov’t Mule and John Scofield will head out on a 12-show U.S. tour next month in support of Sco-Mule. For Gov't Mule's latest music, news, and tour dates, check out their Zumic artist page.
