For Record Store Day this past Saturday, the folks at Rounder Records released a Gregg Allman 10" picture disc that featured previously unreleased live versions of "Whipping Post" and "I'm No Angel" along with two live versions of "Melissa" and "Midnight Rider." Above, you can watch the live version of "Midnight Rider," featuring Zac Brown and Vince Gill, that is included on the release.
Gregg Allman starts the song off vocally and on his Gibson acoustic guitar before trading verses with Zac Brown. Keyboards, horns, and Vince Gill's electric guitar solo give the song a full sounding vibe while the crowd sings along near the end. It's one of the Allman Brothers Band's most recognizable songs, and kind of makes you wish the three artists would have jammed out on it a bit longer.
This performance is also included on a 2014 release titled All My Friends: Celebrating The Songs & Voice Of Gregg Allman in which as assortment of musicians pay tribute to the music of Gregg Allman. You can pick that up on Amazon (DVD & CD, MP3).
