New York funk rockers Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds have released their third studio album, titled The Weather Below. It was recorded over a three week period at Bear Creek Studio in Washington and produced by Ryan Hadlock, with all the songs written by singer Arleigh Kincheloe. Band members on the album include guitarist Sasha Brown, bassist Josh Myers, drummer Dan Boyden, Arleigh's brother Jackson Kincheloe on harmonica, trumpeter Phil Rodriguez, and baritone saxophonist Brian Graham.

Speaking with Diffuser, Arleigh Kincheloe explains the songs and her personal connection to them:

These songs are my favorite. I love them. They are full of my history, my childhood, my experience, my family. I tried to think of what inspired me, what made me feel something. My family reared its beautiful and insane head — I am who I am because of them, and my songs are me, therefore these songs are made of all of them.

To categorize The Weather Below is a difficult task because it contains so many influences from genres like soul, funk, R&B, rock, blues, and pop. It's those ingredients, though, that make this such a fun and easy album to listen to.

Tracks like "Borderline," "Sugar," and "Every Road" have feel good dance vibes that stretch from '70s funk to modern latin influences. "Mama Knows" incorporates elements of R&B and soul with horns and harp that add flavor. If relaxed, sultry grooves are what you're looking for, then tracks like "Prison Cells" and "Disappear" should satisfy your need.

The Dirty Birds show off their bluesy roots in "Don't Be Jealous," adding background organ and horns with a steady, midtempo groove. "Cold Blooded" is another standout track with gritty harp playing, a thick bassline, and a strong distorted guitar solo. Arleigh Kincheloe's vocals on the two aforementioned songs are possibly the strongest you'll find on the album, as she lets loose with a soulful approach that would probably have the late Janis Joplin smiling.

The closing song on any album is always important because you want the listener wanting to hear more. "Catch Me If You Can," featuring bluesy harp and swampy slide guitar playing, does just that.

The Weather Below proudly showcases the musical abilities and strengths of Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds. Having formed in 2008 and this being their third studio album, the band sounds mature and confident. 2015 should be a breakout year for them, and deservingly so.

Recommended tracks include "Sugar," "Disappear," "Every Road," and "Cold Blooded."

The Weather Below is available on Amazon (Vinyl, CD, MP3). You can also stream the full album above via Spotify.
