Jason Isbell has released a new album titled Something More Than Free. The album is Isbell's first since his award winning 2013 Southeastern.

Romance, reparations, remorse, and loneliness -- themes that made his former record such a success -- haunt and drive Something More Than Free, a blend between country and Southern rock.

Isbell does a fabulous job throughout the album of developing strong, relatable characters, the most memorable of whom might be those from "Flagship." The soft-sung, acoustic track is about a young couple, worried about their future and an indifferent romance. Beautifully accurate in their portrayal, one might argue that the album's characters draw traits from Isbell himself. The parallels between Isbell and the clear-eyed, sober character from the opening "If It Takes a Lifetime" are hard to overlook.

Whether or not the characters stem from a personal place or from outside influences, it's clear that Isbell is still writing accessible, catchy, Southern tunes.
