In the competitive world of hip hop, where everyone is out to be the greatest of all time, rappers are applauded for creatively placing their words to diss the next. Brooklyn rapper, Your Old Droog, is on the rise for being too nice with it. Following Kinison and Your Old Droog, The Nicest EP was delivered this week.

Though he's nice on the mic, Droog is not trying to make any friends on this record. Straight from the first track, “We Don’t Know You,” he's calling out whack rappers and boasting about what he's out here bringing to the game.

In an interview with Complex, Your Old Droog revealed some inside information on his artistry and working on The Nicest. He shared that his favorite songs are “Through The Nose” and “Listen,” breaking down the wrestling references in the latter:

I used to cop the old retrospective WrestleMania VHS from the video store. I remember watching that shit vividly. I remember WrestleMania 9 when they were outside and shit. The third verse is breaking down the whole fight with Yokozuna when Hulk Hogan came out and gave him the leg drop. It’s funny shit. I don’t take myself seriously in music. I’m having fun with it. That’s a big part of what I do, so the absurdity of name dropping Yokozuna with a straight face is funny.

Along with DJ Skizz, producers Marco Polo, and El RTNC are frequent collaborates of the Droog sound. Returning again on The Nicest, their clean and detailed funky-jazz hip hop production has been perfected. The EP is smooth and cohesive from start to finish. On the track “Word,” electric bass guitar supports the wah-wah guitar. Jazz is also expressed as an influence in Y.O.D.’s raps. He spits on “Word”:

What hasn't been done before is what we're trying to do
On the verge of taking over the game, you just Kind of Blue
I’m already working on my Bitches Brew
Perfect games, look at how many pitchers we brew

This a reference to the renowned albums Kind of Blue and Bitches Brew, by the legendary jazz musician Miles Davis. It’s also a confident testament. On “Wave Rider,” he speaks on the noise he’s made so far and calls out the biters who just play to the hype. The EP closes out with one rhyme packed verse on “Have A Nice Day.”
