Sometimes, there's a good reason why certain songs aren't included on an official studio album or even the deluxe version. This alternate take of Bob Dylan's "Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat," recorded in 1966, is a good example of that. The track will be included on a 2015 release titled The Cutting Edge 1965-1966, featuring outtakes and previously unreleased versions of songs. Listen to it above, via Bob Dylan's YouTube.
The song originally appeared on Dylan’s 1966 Blonde on Blonde double-LP. The original album version is a classic number with bluesy overtones. The alternate take above is much more upbeat, with a bouncy rhythm. There's minor lyrical differences between this and the original version, and both retain their sarcastic sense of humor. What stands out here is the inclusion of sound effects like a car horn and telephone ring, which are slightly annoying and really don't add much to the overall tune.
Other songs that have been shared from the upcoming collection include "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again," "Sitting On A Barbed Wire Fence," "Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?," and "It Takes a Lot to Laugh It Takes a Train to Cry."
The Cutting Edge 1965-1966 is scheduled for a November 6, 2015 release. Deluxe box sets are available on Bob Dylan's website. You can also pick up the Best Of... 2 CD version on Amazon (CD, MP3).
